Unreliable News from An Unreliable Source
“ A library user may have gone on the run after the loan of his book expired. The suspect took out “The History of Egypt” three and a half weeks ago, but neglected to renew it on time, leading to anxiety and angst amonst staff.
“We thought the borrower would be back before the date stated” said one assistant, fighting back the tears “But there was no sign of him. Or her.”. She then turned and ran to a corner of the library normally used for jigsaws to be comforted by a colleague.
“We normally have books back well within the given loan period” said head librarian Maurice Cotch “But this has been three days now. My staff are in pieces, two of them have needed counselling and I would be lying if I told you this hadn’t caused me to consider if I picked the right career” he said, his fists clenching and unclenching.
A press conference broadcast on local radio and television regarding the missing book yeilded no developments, and a volunteer based search for the book, involving knocking on the borrowers’ door also got nowhere.
“There was no reply, leading me to suspect he was out” said the volunteer “which then leads me to believe he’s gone on the run” he added.
This hypothesis has been picked up by local book enthusiasts who have combed the hillside, parks and garden sheds for where the late returner would be lurking.
And while this story was being read the book was returned and it’s all fine now.
